Geopolymer concrete and cross-laminated timber panels: Towards sustainable and climate-resilient construction

Grant for early career professors - 2024
Description
This project explores the integration of geopolymer concrete (GC) and cross-laminated timber (CLT) panels to develop environmentally friendly and high-performance structures. Although wood-based materials are gaining popularity, current standards (CSA O86) do not yet incorporate these new material combinations.
Objectives
- Characterize the mechanical properties and durability of geopolymer concrete.
- Test and optimize shear connections between GC and CLT.
- Developing digital models to simulate and predict structural performance.
- Incorporate recycled materials (slag, ore residues) for more sustainable construction.
A step towards circular and resilient construction
The results will provide a better understanding of the performance of GC-CLT panels, facilitate their adoption in the industry, and contribute to the evolution of design standards. This project aligns with the AdapT Institute’s mission by reducing the carbon footprint of infrastructure and promoting resilient and innovative materials.
