Pilot test of aquifer recharge: an adaptation solution for sustainable agriculture

Fonds d’amorçage CentrEau - Complément de bourses 2025
Description
Faced with growing challenges in accessing water due to climate change, this project explores managed aquifer recharge (MAR) as a local adaptation solution in Quebec. Although widely used elsewhere in the world, this approach remains marginal here due to specific hydrogeological conditions. The project aims to test recharge infrastructure adapted to small local Quaternary aquifers, which are widely distributed throughout the territory. By focusing on the agricultural sector, this initiative contributes to improving regional water resilience while reducing runoff and pressure on aquatic ecosystems.
Objectives
- Developing a prototype MAR solution for storing rainwater and reusing it for agricultural purposes
- Promote water infiltration into the water table and reduce runoff and contaminant inputs into waterways.
- Securing access to and availability of water for agriculture.
Case study
A pilot test will be conducted at the Sainte-Marthe Experimental Watershed, a research facility operated by ÉTS and CentrEau. It will consist of a trench filled with gabions and equipped with instruments to monitor changes in water volume and quality in real time. The initial recharge will use only rainwater collected from buildings, ensuring adequate quality of the infiltrated water. Phase 2 will integrate other sites and analyze the possibility of infiltrating water of different qualities in partnership with the MELCCFP and researchers specializing in metal mobility and contaminant treatment. Ultimately, the solution can be replicated and adapted to other sites with different hydrogeological contexts.
Don’t just coexist with climate change.
