The Electric Manic GT – A Laboratory on Wheels for Sustainable Innovation

The Electric Manic GT – A Laboratory on Wheels for Sustainable Innovation

AdapT Project

Description

A symbol of Quebec ingenuity, the Manic GT is the only car ever designed and manufactured in Quebec. More than fifty years after its creation, it is being reborn today in a new form—a 100% electric version that embodies the values of circularity, innovation, and sustainability.

This ambitious project, led by the Cégep de Saint-Jérôme, the Institut du véhicule innovant (IVI), the École de technologie supérieure (ÉTS), and the Institut AdapT, aims to convert a 1970 Manic GT into a functional electric vehicle and a research laboratory. Beyond a heritage restoration, this project represents a research infrastructure that will be used to develop, test, demonstrate, and promote innovation in sustainable mobility originating from research laboratories.

An AdapT Signature Project

This project is part of the Signatures AdapT series of projects, which aim to transform ideas into concrete, practical solutions. By bringing together expertise from community colleges, universities, and industry, the Manic GT Electric will become:

  • A mobile lab: a modular, constantly evolving platform for testing new batteries, smart sensors, and low-carbon materials from various research laboratories;
  • A tool for training and engagement: a multidisciplinary project that brings together students, researchers, and technicians to tackle a concrete energy transition challenge;
  • A symbol of circularity and local ingenuity: the transformation of a vintage vehicle into a modern prototype embodies Quebec’s ability to innovate by drawing on its own heritage.

A vehicle driving toward the future

Several research teams are currently working on specific projects. In addition to serving as a laboratory, once converted, the electric Manic GT will be used to transport research teams from the Institut AdapT and its partners. It will also participate in educational and scientific events, serving as a living showcase of Quebec’s innovation in sustainable transportation.
This project is made possible thanks to the major support of Genium360, the initiative’s lead partner, which is contributing to its implementation. This support helps accelerate the development of this research and demonstration platform dedicated to innovation in sustainable mobility, the circular economy, and the promotion of Quebec’s expertise.

Don’t just coexist with climate change.
